I'm Sharm and thanks for stopping by STUDIO MURUGIAH. Here's my story:
I arrived at commercial art in the best way possible, the long way. From a young age I was always drawing, growing up on a healthy diet of American comics, Scifi & horror movies I was way too young for and punk rock music. Nearing the end of my time at school I knew I wanted to draw for a living. Unfortunately the powers that be namely Parents and teachers advised me to work in a creative industry that had a regular income. So I trained as an architect for 7 long years BUT throughout my architecture degree I found myself being more attracted to the illustrative parts of the course. I was also becoming more aware of graphic design and illustration. I eventually left architecture to work in house as a designer for Scribbler cards and later at LEON restaurants, again leaning towards the illustrative parts of these jobs.
Taking in all that I had learnt over this long journey I eventually set up on my own as a self employed commercial artist and started STUDIO MURUGIAH
I've had the opportunity to work with some amazing clients since I started Studio Murugiah including:
Little White Lies
No Exit Press
I tend to enjoy working in an off beat cartoon style inspired by the comics of my youth covering a plethora of subjects from surreal imagery to detailed character filled images to quirky maps and more realistic character pieces.
In 2014 I won a D&AD award, the 'In Book Award, Magazine & Newspaper Design/Entire Magazine' as a contributing illustrator for Little White Lies issue 49, and have had work on display in galleries and exhibitions in America, France and the UK, most notably ‘Star Wars - An Art Odyssey’: an officially licensed Disney/Lucasfilm Star wars show in Marseille.
I'm also a bit of a chatterbox ask me a question about movies, art or creativity and I wont shut up until i'm told too! I've put these skills to good use speaking about careers in the arts at schools and running workshops in London.
for any brand and commercial projects Studio Murugiah is represented by the fantastic folk at Debut Art.
